Morality Aesthetics 🦋

 What Is Morality?

What is this set of rules which we are meant to operate upon? Does anybody have the actual guidelines which we are meant to follow? Is there an overall consensus based upon our agreement of reality? Or are we all just acting upon our own intentions, disguising our actions as something greater than our wants?

I believe it was Nietzsche who said,

morality had aesthetics.

He basically argued, that if you killed a cockroach, nobody would bat an eye- however, if you killed a butterfly, everybody would lose their mind. It’s hard to argue with that kind of logic. It’s difficult to say that he was wrong in his assessment. Throughout history, over and over again, our morality has truly depended on the aesthetics we observe, and which side of the fence we sit on. The constant grey-zone, between what is right and what is wrong.

Answering these questions is not something which can be discovered lightly. How can one truly create a blanket statement, which covers all sorts of real-world issues? Do not kill thy neighbour is an easy one- unless, of course, your neighbour is planning on committing a horrendous crime. At that point, is one obligated to kill him? Is he burdened with the responsibility, to save countless other lives, by simply committing a single sin? Or is man meant to sit back and allow God to cast judgement, once all is said and done here on Earth?

    That last part bothers me.

Perhaps the final judgement is not meant to be cast by human beings. However, to simply sit back and allow evil to happen, in my opinion, is as great of a sin as evil itself. The ideology and mentality of allowing somebody else to deal with it, arguably, has lead us in the West to be trapped in the mess we currently find ourselves in. The laissez-faire approach of all matters in society, slowly decaying and unravelling the very fabric which we live in.

So can we as humans truly expect to create a perfect system,

where all situations are covered?

Or is morality based upon a case-by-case approach? If the latter is the truth, then what’s stopping human corruption from altering the very system which we have set in place? What stops us from changing the direction that which we separate good and evil, slowly blurring the lines which lay in between? The mental gymnastics is complete madness, leaving one often with more questions than when they began.

Following a strict, no-mercy set of rules, is most likely the best path forward. And yet, as we have seen throughout history, good times create weak men. The enforcement of said rules becomes lax, eventually leading to the complete downfall and destruction of them entirely. And lo and behold, we find ourselves in yet again another repeat of the same societal cycle.

Perhaps we as humans are simply meant to repeat the same mistakes of the past? Perhaps, we are cursed to wander eternity, never truly learning from what we’ve done in our previous lifetimes. Maybe the repetition of the same actions, over and over, are some form of celestial comedy, for our Creator to sit back and watch in amusement. Maybe God is simply lacking entertainment, and we are the next-best thing.

If I were God, I would grow bored eventually.

After creating a Universe, and designing all that there is within- I would require something to keep me active. I would want something to keep me engaged. Perhaps we humans are simply meant to do just that- entertain our Creator. Perhaps, we are just a terribly-written sit-com, where the writers recycle and repeat the same jokes, over and over again. Every single time, that we as a society think we’ve gotten it right- down the drain and collapse it again.

Morality circles back to my previous entry-

What is it we are looking to achieve?

What is it, we as a species, are trying to obtain? Are we striving towards immortality? If so, who cares about morality and the decisions we make. Or is there something greater? Are we truly living in a test? Do we need to prove our worthiness? Or are we literally ants in a farm, providing constant entertainment.

Once again, these questions create only one thing- more questions. These late-night thoughts, floating around in my head. The never-ending, always-changing morality, that we humans hold so dear.

Maybe it’s time we all got off our high-horse,

and faced the reality of our decisions instead.

        Godspeed.
