Saint Valentine of Rome ๐Ÿซ€

 Apparently, it’s Valentine’s Day.

Whatever that means. Celebrate love? Never heard of it.

Apparently, Saint Valentine was an individual who was beaten and murdered. Now, we celebrate him by sending roses and chocolates to loved ones. To be fair, I don’t know much about him. I would have to do research in order to better understand what the man was all about. Like most Western holidays, there is probably little to zero original meaning behind it all. Seriously. We here in the West have a tremendous passion for taking things completely out of context, and creating them into some form of false idol. Santa Claus is probably a good example. Christ, even the Easter Bunny can fall into that trap. The truth is, we over-celebrate everything, with false icons and idols, driving up consumerism. What a world, eh?

One of the things about our Western culture, especially as of late, is we have dedicated some sore of celebration to something, every single day. Seriously, have you ever noticed? National Hot Dog Day. National Red Buggy Day. National Cat Day. National, national, national. It’s honestly mind-blowing and completely insane. Every single week, we have some sort of mundane and irrelevant holiday, sprinkled within our daily routines. The idea that if we celebrate these things together, with everybody else around us, we can help bring more fun into our lives. What a complete, utter joke.

The reality is, we are being force-fed these nonstop holidays because they are meant to distract us. They are meant to keep us occupied, celebrating National Day of Cheese, instead of paying attention to what’s really going on. After you wake up, and finally see thru the act, it hits you like a ton of bricks. It makes you realize that we are living in a dystopian world. Every single week, National something-something day. And we’re meant to pretend like we care. Celebrate, like it’s important. Go around, joking with our friends, talking about it and using it as an excuse to consume. It’s ridiculous. It’s never-ending propaganda, from the world’s greatest propaganda machine.

Now I know, I know, you’re probably thinking- relax, it’s just for fun! What’s the big deal? Well, love-birds, the big deal is that you’re being programmed by the media, without even realizing it. You’re being driven to talking points and consumer cycles, without even taking a second to stop and understand what is truly going on. How many of you went out today, of all days, to buy roses and chocolate for your significant other, and express to them how much you care? Let me ask you something- why today? Why didn’t you show them you loved them last week, with roses and chocolates then? Why didn’t you buy them something nice, say, in January? What is it about today that makes you subconsciously driven, to purchase material objects?

The media. It’s evident. Much like Christmas today, the media has completely flipped the holiday into a consumer market. How many of you still even celebrate Christmas, the way it was meant to be? Do you go to Church on Christmas Eve? Do you sing prayer and celebrate the so-called day of Birth of Jesus Christ? Or do you simply use it as an excuse to buy presents and pig out at dinner? Do you simply run around, drink, smoke and consume, with no limits? Have you completely forgotten the meaning of anything, and simply bought into the consumer-driven holiday, driven by the media and chains?

We have completely and utterly lost our ways. We have been brainwashed by television, radio, and advertisements, into purchasing products as a sign of love. Christmas, Easter, Valentine’s Day, and anything else. We feel as though we can somehow measure our love or affection thru gifts and presents. We have completely lost our minds, and have fallen into a consumer-driven trap. Valentine’s Day is no different.

If you truly loved your significant other, why do you need to wait until today to show it? Why do you need to only buy them chocolates and flowers, and shower them with loving words, today of all days? Are you seriously so incapable of doing so yourself, that you require a media-driven holiday to bring forth those actions? Do you simply not care nor love your partner, the other 364 days of the year? Why does a television commercial and calendar date become necessary, for you to show your love? None of it makes any sense. As I stated in the beginning- do any of you even know who Saint Valentine was and what he was all about? Do you even have a clue what the man behind the holiday stood for, and what he accomplished while living? My guess is no.

I suppose I sound like the grinch, bitching and moaning about absolutely nothing. Well, I am a writer. That’s kinda the description of the job. However, I simply just don’t understand the average human being anymore. I have completely dropped out of modern pop culture, and no longer follow the trends. If you love your significant other, why are you waiting til you’re told, to show them you care? Why are you letting a made-up calendar date, tell you to shower them in love? Why are you, as an individual, so easily controlled and manipulated by the media, to the point where you only open up and care when you’re instructed to? Be your own individual. Think with your own head.

Love isn’t something you can limit to once a calendar year. Love is something you should celebrate, 365 days a year. Some days are harder than others, no doubt about it. Some are flat out nightmares. However, at the end of the day, you’ve got to be all-in to win. You’ve got to appreciate every single day, with your loved ones. You’ve got to realize how fortunate you are, and to show them that you care. You have to step up and show up, every single day, in order to keep it rolling. You’ve got to show love, outside of a calendar date.

        Glory Be,
