Psyche - Ology 🧠

 The marathon continues.

Another week has arrived. Monday Funday, baby. The never-ending rollercoaster called life. It truly is a rat-race, when you sit down and think about it. Always on the go, always chasing after something that doesn’t exist. Spending your life running around, trying to collect pieces of paper because you believe they’ll buy you freedom. More like free-dumb. Seriously. How can anybody still believe it anymore?

I sometimes think about a great piece I read once by a professor from a University in Canada. They basically said that, all those who say we should tear down society and dismantle it, have never lived in another form of rule other than the one they know. Which is true. I’ve never lived in a communist country. I’ve never had to fight, steal or starve for food. Capitalism is the only structure I have ever spent my life within, seeing as I was born into it. However, I still believe there is something more. I still stand by the notion that we as a society can come up with a better system than the one we currently have.

Tearing down and criticizing is the easy part. Anybody in the world can sit around and point fingers all days. The true challenge lies in truly being able to present a solution to the problem instead. That is where things get tricky. I do not claim to be an economist. I do not even claim to have an answer to everything which is currently going on. All I do know is- there has to be a better way. We as a society, are failing. We are being run into the ground, burnt at every single corner. Humans were not built to run around like robots, constantly grinding away 24/7.

Mental Health is a fascinating subject. One thing which stands out the most to me today, is how many individuals fall into the category. A majority of the population now identifies within that bracket. Whether it be from depression, from anxiety, to any other form of so-called diagnosis on the spectrum of mental health. The never-ending cycle of things simply being off, and not running as a smooth system within. These terms were never present in the past, because they weren’t necessary. Looking at history, I would personally argue that the greatest time where Mental Health was needed in society, was right after World War II. Soldiers who returned from battle, who may even have lived long enough to serve in World War I as well, were damaged. They were witness to monstrosities and horrible conditions, which the human mind was not prepared to witness. Yet where were their Mental Health initiatives when we as humans needed them the most?

We always turn towards science, and claim that we simply do not know enough. We say that humans did not understand the Mental Health industry, had little knowledge on the effects of the brain, and how we would respond to certain types of trauma. I disagree. I believe that we, as humans, have known for centuries- millenniums- how trauma can affect us. The difference between then and now, is that we as a society are completely and utterly obsessed with science. Every single thing, has to be measured and bargained. We must analyze every last drop and reaction, until there is nothing left to analyze except the individual itself. There’s this great saying which essentially says, the more you study a certain subject, the more it becomes philosophy. I agree.

Psychology is the great word which sounds so cool when you say it. Seriously, try it out. Did you know that Psychology actually stems from two words, combined into one? Psyche and Ology. Do you have any idea what each of those words stand for? Psyche, is a Greek word for spirit, while Ology, translated to study. Therefor, the word Psychology is actually just the Study of the Spirit. Fascinating, isn’t it?

If we choose to study the spirit, would you not expect to find certain things which should be out of this world? Should you not openly assume, that the spirit of mankind may not be operating on the same playing field as we do ourselves in the physical world? Then how come, we only analyze the brain and its effects, instead of the spirit? Why is it that when we determine that the spirit has something bothering it, we prescribe medication to alter the chemistry of the brain? None of it makes any sense, when you sit down and truly think about it. We have essentially said that the radio signal isn’t coming in correctly, therefor we need to rearrange the entire inside of the radio box. Wouldn’t you want to check the antenna and signal first, before you mess with the cables?

Overall, science has made things backwards. Of course, I am meant to celebrate and cheer on the medical advancements we have made as a society, which has helped countless lives around the globe. But one of the things I have always kept in mind, is that despite all of the advancements, science has never saved a life. The death rate of the world is currently running at 100%. Every single individual, no matter their money, power or status, has fallen to the angel of Death. Our precious, so-called science, has had to find victory on the battlefield.

People always argue, saying that the previous statement is not true. That science HAS saved lives, and has kept individuals from falling into a premature death. However, who are they to determine what is premature? Who are we, as individuals, as humans, to dictate when our time has come? It becomes a question of faith, a question of God. We as humans struggle with the concept, the notion, that we are not in charge. The human ego is hell-bent on becoming all powerful, all knowing. We are willing to experiment, torture, mess and manipulate all aspects of life, in search for the answers. Something deep inside of us, drives us to new limits we have never experienced before.

Psychology should reflect the spirit. The spirit of man, attached to God. We are all important players in this game called life. Our spirit should be encouraged and strengthened, by reaching out and connecting with the divine. Much like the famous painting by Michelangelo and the Creation of Adam. God is always there, always present- it is simply up to man to have the courage to reach out and touch.

        Glory Be,

                    Amen.
